Windpower Update from Nordex Balcke-Dürr p.10
In November 1997, 3 units of the Nordex N29/250 kW wind turbine with 30 m. tubular towers
were shipped from the factory in Denmark, to the final destination Huxley Hill at King
Island in the\ southern part of Australia.
The customer Hydro-Electric Corporation, awarded Nordex Balcke-Dürr and their Australian
agent Sterling Wind Pty.Ltd. to supply equipment for their first commercial wind power
project.
The selection of the Nordex N29/250 kW wind turbine, is a proper choice, while the wind
conditions at the site is estimated to an average annual wind speed of more than 9 m/s
corresponding to the production of more than 1.000.000 kWh/year for each wind turbine.
This requires a high quality wind turbine, and Nordex Balcke-Dürr is confident that the
N29/250 kW turbine will fulfill the requirements and expectations from the customer.
Hydro-Electric Corporation who is the owner and operator of the King Island's 3 MW Diesel
Generation sets, expects that the turbines will generate 20% of the island's power needs,
saving about $ 500,000 a year in fuel costs, and at the same time reducing the combustion
of fuel gases to the environment respectively. The maximum wind penetration is expected to
be 30% of the load, which can be achieved by using an advanced control system and SCR
electronic controlled dump-loads.
The site preparations was started in November 1997, and the wind turbines and control
system is expected to be commissioned in the beginning of 1998. At that time the
inhabitants of King Island and the many tourists visiting the island, can enjoy the new
environmental friendly power production facility at the island, and at the same time get
an idea of the impressive forces contained in the wind when it's passing the island.
